2. Why should my child with special needs learn the piano?
Learning how to play the piano is a great opportunity to use
and develop math skills and increase the amount of instructional
time your child is exposed to. Following directions and sitting
appropriately are two examples of skills that are taught to
during lessons. These can be generalized into the classroom
and allow your child to be more successful at school. Being
able to play the piano is also a highly respected ability.

3. My child doesn’t seem to be musically inclined, should
they take lessons?
Yes, if you would like your child to play an instrument, have
them take lessons. Using the Innovative Piano approach, which
builds on basic matching skills and provides errorless teaching
at first makes it very likely that your child will play songs
rather quickly.

5 . How long will my child’s lessons be?
Lessons are typically 1 hour in length. This time is divided into
‘practicing time’ and ‘free time’. Depending
on many factors, including age and skill level, total practicing
time is usually between 75%– 90% of the lesson. Token boards
are typically used to determine when ‘free time’ will begin.

6. Where will lessons be held?
Innovative Piano provides in-home piano instruction. A keyboard or piano is required. Since practice is a key factor in your child’s success it is important to have at least a keyboard in the home (an electronic keyboard is fine). 7 . What is ABA?
The field of Applied Behavioral Analysis grew out of the scientific
study of principles of learning and behavior. It is an applied
science that develops methods of changing or enhancing behavior
and a profession that provides services to meet diverse behavioral
needs that is based on a mature body of scientific knowledge.
In other words, through scientific research, experts in psychology
have determined that applying certain principles to human behavior
can have a positive effect on the development on that individual.
These principles have been shown to be highly effective on the
special needs population but they are applicable to everyone.
